Danielle Levitt New York

Born: Los Angeles, CA
Profession: Photographer
Places traveled or favorite places: Africa, Morocco, Costa Rica, Europe
Bio: Born in Cali, I started taking photos after I stole my mothers 35mm Canon ( I was ten). Oh I loved it! I loved the way the camera looked, and how it felt to press the shutter release. By the time I was in Junior High School, the camera was just as much a part of me as my arm. I joined the yearbook and would shoot all of my friends doing their best model poses. It was clear, that I wanted nothing else than to become a photographer. When I could I moved to NY (rumor had it, that NY is where the photographers were, so I arrived with my best friend and some cheap luggage.) It took a few but I finally got my start, a street fashion column in the NY POST. It was the late 1990s so i found joys in capturing styles that varied from a single strap messenger bag look to a slip over pants ensemble.

I have since cultivated a distinctive approach to identifying and documenting popular culture, fascinated by how people live and the means they use to express themselves. I documented those choices, in my first monograph 'We Are Experienced',  published by Powerhouse late last year. I traveled the United States photographing teenagers, shooting youth as they want to be seen, resulting in a  series of portraits depicting adolescents in a variety of urban, suburban, and rural settings, as individuals and in groups, loaded with signifiers both mainstream and marginal.  All the while I maintained an editorial presence, shooting celebrities and fashion for an assortment of magazines. My editorial work is featured in GQ, The New York Times Magazine, Arena Homme Plus,  Dazed and Confused and Rolling Stone. I have created advertising campaigns for Nike, Intel, Penguin, and Target.
