Driving up Highway 1, one will know their destination has arrived once they are on the cliffs of windy roads surrounded between views of the ocean and mountains. The mysterious beauty overtakes you as this grandeur feeling is higher than life. A magical place: Big Sur and Carmel where a number of artists resided from Henry Miller, Robinson Jeffers, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Orson Wells and others.
What made me and others fall in love with an actual place: there is a peace of mind here you get surrounded with the vast offerings of nature: a crashing alive ocean amongst high rock cliffs, rocky beaches, green mountains and forests, cypress trees and natural hot springs. All in the company of like-minded people who strive for a peaceful retreat to live or visit and good food in a quiet serene atmosphere.
From a day to the Henry Miller Library exploring the authors who also resided in this area or surrounding, sipping tea and enjoying the grass field and trees that compose the landscape; to a walk on the beach with holeless caves and statuesque rocks allowing crashing waves to pour through you will feel fulfilled. There are also many hiking trails with lush green surroundings leading to the body of water.
Have a drink at Nepenthe if you can at sunset overlooking the blue land of the Pacific. Going into the evening sitting around the firepit outside enjoying the conversations from choices of life, what brought you to this magnificent place or what brought you here. There is a common connection with the people arriving here: they seem to appreciate the land, the beauty, the peacefulness and the energy this place holds.
For a fantastic breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack you will not go wrong with the Big Sur Bakery: all fresh juices and baked goods. This is a pure delights.
Deetjan’s is a nice stay if you are looking for more of a rustic-cabin type feel. It has a stream running through it’s property outside and high trees throughout it’s environment. One can easily sit by the fire for hours that some of the cabins provide. The food offered for breakfast and dinner is home cooked and amazing!
For a high priced dinner with an incredible view, you can not miss the Post Ranch Inn. The food is pure gourmet and the view of the Pacific looking through high glass windows is breathtaking.
There are many choices in this small town of Big Sur: filled with substance, nature, peace and quality. As Robinson Jeffers said, “This is God’s Country.”
