Monastero Hotel is located in Pantelleria: an island at the Mediterranean Sea between Europe and Africa. It lies in the heart of a national park and is a hidden gem to travelers seeking rest, meditation and a unique experience. The island belongs to Italy but is much closer to Africa: 43 miles from the Tunisian Coast. Olive groves, grapevines, wildflowers, and remains of lava rocks make up its surroundings. The island's traditional architecture consists of rural houses called dammusi - cavelike, thick walls, small windows and dome shaped roofs. Architect Gabriella Giuntoli and photographer Ferri collaborated to open the hotel. Monastero had six whitewashed guest rooms minimally furnished made from handmade stones. Recently there has been some renovation: now there is a total of nine rooms: some with private gardens, some with frescoes, and all with large baths and shaded verandas. Gem-toned linens, antique beds and sculptural lamps mix with some African textiles.
The property includes a charming pool and nearby are excursions to archaeological sites, local food and Passito, the sweet Pantellerian wine.
