Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Returns to The Music Center for an Unforgettable Residency in Los Angeles
Celebrating the Legacy of Judith Jamison with Two Inspiring Programs and L.A. Premieres
LOS ANGELES (February 26, 2025) — The Music Center proudly welcomes back Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for a spectacular seven-performance engagement at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion from April 2–6, 2025. As part of the company’s exclusive multi-year Southern California residency, this season’s performances celebrate the life and legacy of Judith Jamison, the legendary dancer and Artistic Director Emerita who passed away in 2024. Under the direction of Interim Artistic Director Matthew Rushing, the company presents two distinct programs featuring Los Angeles premieres, beloved repertory pieces, and Ailey’s timeless masterpiece, Revelations.
A Celebration of Dance and Legacy
For over six decades, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has been a beacon of artistic excellence and cultural expression, inspiring audiences worldwide. This season, the company continues to honor its rich heritage while embracing the future of modern dance. The two specially curated programs showcase works from both emerging and established choreographers, offering audiences a dynamic blend of new productions, iconic classics, and tributes to Judith Jamison’s enduring influence.
Program A: L.A. Premieres and Contemporary Masterpieces
April 2, 4, and 6 (Evening) | April 5 (Matinee)
• Sacred Songs (2024) – Matthew Rushing’s deeply personal tribute to Ailey’s roots, featuring spirituals from the original 1960 version of Revelations.
• Many Angels (2024) – Lar Lubovitch’s breathtaking new work set to Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, exploring movement, faith, and imagination.
• Treading (1979) – Elisa Monte’s mesmerizing duet, a study in fluidity and sensuality, set to the meditative rhythms of Steve Reich.
Program B: Ailey Classics and a Tribute to Judith Jamison
April 3 and 5 (Evening) | April 6 (Matinee)
• Grace (1999, new production) – Ronald K. Brown’s exhilarating journey blending African and contemporary dance, set to the music of Duke Ellington, Peven Everett, and Fela Kuti.
• Ailey Excerpts – A collection of highlights from Ailey’s groundbreaking works, including Pas De Duke, Masekela Langage, Opus McShann, Love Songs, and For ‘Bird’ – With Love.
• Cry (1971, tribute performance) – A powerful solo originally created for Judith Jamison, celebrating the resilience and triumph of Black women.
A Grand Finale: Revelations
Every performance will conclude with Alvin Ailey’s most celebrated work, Revelations. This timeless masterpiece, set to a soul-stirring score of African American spirituals, captures the struggles, faith, and jubilation of the human spirit. Audiences around the world have been moved by its emotional depth and breathtaking choreography, making it an essential experience for dance lovers of all ages.
Bringing the Power of Dance to the Community
As part of its residency, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will engage the Los Angeles community through special programs:
• Student Matinee (April 4, 2025): Over 3,000 middle and high school students will experience a live Ailey performance at The Music Center.
• Arts Education Outreach: Ailey Arts In Education will bring the Revelations: An Interdisciplinary Approach program to LAUSD middle schools, combining dance, history, and self-expression.
• AileyDance for Active Aging: In partnership with EngAGE, Inc., the company will lead a movement workshop for older adults at The Piedmont Senior Apartments in North Hollywood.
