Lawson Fenning / Los Angeles, CA

Lawson Fenning began our exploration when we were furniture design students at ArtCenter College in the late 1990s. Pasadena was a welcoming place: the area’s appreciation for a contemporary golden age of design and craft had been on point ever since Eudorah Moore’s 1960s/1970s California Design exhibitions; the vast Rose Bowl flea market still felt like undiscovered territory for 20th-century design pickers; and square footage for creatives wasn’t exorbitant. We took a studio space in Old Town Pasadena as our workshop, mostly to make new furniture, tinker and reimagine vintage pieces. To our surprise, people walked in off the street and purchased them. The store we called Rm.107 evolved, almost by accident. We’ve been in business ever since. Glenn Lawson + Grant Fenning = Lawson-Fenning.

Nineteen years later, we’re still hunting for and dreaming up the pieces we love, albeit on a larger retail scale: a two-story Melrose Avenue flagship and a separate LF workshop where we craft our furniture. We keep our inventory moving so we can build an idea, discover new artists, and see collaborations through. As a result, our showroom never quite looks the same from day to day. After all, a home is a dynamic space that ought never collect dust.

“WE BELIEVE ASPIRATIONAL IS ATTAINABLE”

The largest branch of our business is still the LF Collection of handmade furniture. We supplement our work with works of vintage design from the 20th-century that both inform and complement our overall aesthetic. As we look back, we also look forward, proud to have nurtured an eclectic cadre of emerging and established names in the decorative arts. We invite these future voices to collaborate on one-of-a-kind ceramics, lighting, and objects, and subsequently give them a platform to display their craft.

Finally, new to our flagship is our smalls shop-in-shop. This “designer’s dirty secret” stocks the well-edited house dressing we think is missing from the marketplace: limited-release ceramics, tabletop, and gifts. Updated in real-time, our online portal and 1stdibs stores mirror these experiences.

Lawson Fenning are sincere in our mission to provide a hub of knowledge and vintage-modern design for anyone, professional designer or enthusiast—we love them both. And even if you don’t go hunting for Soleri bells or Arne Norell on the weekend, we are an accessible alternative to mass-production or cliché knockoff. We believe aspirational is attainable.
